DISTRICT ACCOUNTABILITY
The Sarasaota Downtown Merchants group started in 1985 and has been dedicated to enhancing and advocating for the vibrancy of our downtown district. Here’s how we make a difference.
Advocacy & City Engagement: We attend city commission meetings and actively campaign for the responsible allocation of the district’s 2% self-tax (DID), ensuring it supports initiatives within the DID area.
Holiday & Special Event Sponsorship: We sponsor and install holiday ornaments, as well as decorate the Christmas tree for the annual lighting event in Five Points Park.
Pineapple Drop Block Party: We sponsor and coordinate the New Year’s Eve Pineapple Drop Block Party, one of the most anticipated events in Sarasota.
Event Promotion & Foot Traffic: We collaborate with local promoters to bring events to the district, designed to increase foot traffic and boost engagement.
Marketing & Promotion: We run a year-round marketing campaign to promote downtown as a premier destination for locals and visitors alike.
Community Advocacy: We petition city leaders to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
Economic Growth: We host community events aimed at strengthening the local economy and supporting businesses.
Asset Investments: We purchase key event assets, such as the Christmas Tree, event barricades, and other supplies necessary for successful events.
